HIALEAH, FL – When the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its latest team and individual rankings late Monday, ASA Miami’s men’s and women’s teams were in a familiar position.

The ASA Miami women sat atop the ITA rankings for the second straight release while the Silver Storm men were ranked No. 2.

The women’s team essentially cemented its status at the No. 1 ranked team in the country this past weekend when it dominated the competition at the Region VIII tournament. The Lady Silver Storm won 26 out of a possible 27 points to secure its third regional title in the past four years.

ASA’s men, who don’t compete in a regional tournament, were slotted at the No. 2 spot behind Tyler Junior College (Tx.) – a team that defeated the Silver Storm 5-4 on March 11.

Helgesson Ranked No. 2 Nationally

ASA Miami had multiple players ranked in the ITA’s Top 50 Singles and Top 25 Doubles Monday.

Freshman Molly Helgesson was ranked the No. 2 women’s player in the country – the highest ranked Silver Storm player of either gender. The Lady Silver Storm had three players total ranked in the top 10 – with Tatiana Simova at No. 7 and Irina Lapustina at No. 10.

Zulay Castaneda (No. 26), Michaela Krauskova (No. 35), and Ji-Youn Lee (No. 43) were also ITA ranked individuals.

Also, the combination of Simova and Krauskova was the No. 2 ranked doubles team; Lapustina and Helgesson were ranked as the No. 10 doubles pair, and the duo of Castaneda and Soomin Kim ranked No. 24.

Toru Horie was the highest ranked men’s player – coming in at No. 5. Gustavo Cruz and Sergio Ingles were ranked No. 16 and No. 17 respectively, Matthew Carroll was the No. 27 ranked individual, while Tomas Santantonio came in at No. 40.

Also, Horie and Eladio Fabregas were the No. 2 ranked doubles team while the duo of Ingles and Carroll also made the top 10 – ranking at No. 9.
