ASA Miami Tennis Chasing Three-Peat at Region VIII Tournament

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FLA. - The quest to 'three-peat' as Region VIII champs has begun for the ASA Miami women's tennis team. Day one of the regional tournament began on Friday afternoon at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. The Silver Storm come into the tournament winning the last two in 2016 and 2017. 

In singles play, individuals are seeded one-through-six based on results during matches in the regular season. Seeds one and two earn first round byes. Four singles - Sarah Wardenburg (one seed), five singles - Vanessa Cozamanis (five singles) and six singles - Andrea Sandoval (two seed) all earned byes. Lisa Khamassi (five seed), Kyra Akinnibi (three seed) and Claudia Barboza (three seed) who are flights one, two and three respectively, all won their quarterfinal matches thus earning one team point for each win. Individuals who win a match after receiving a first round bye, receive two team points for a win.

In the semifinal round, five girls won their matches and advanced to the final round. Khamassi fell to the one seed from Hillsborough, Ceire Mullins. Mullins is the fifth ranked JUCO player in the country by ITA. 

In doubles play, ASA earned a first round bye for all three doubles teams and did not participate today. The doubles semifinal round is set to begin tomorrow after all singles matches have been completed. Singles play is set to begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Sanlando Park.

  • 3 Singles | No. 3 Claudia Barboza def. No. 6 Diarra Thomas (SCF) 6-1, 6-0.

Semifinals 

  • 1 Singles | No. 1 Ceire Mullins (Hillsborough) def. No. 5 Lisa Khamassi 6-4, 6-4. 
  • 2 Singles | No. 3 Kyra Akinnibi def. No. 2 Bianca Vitale (Broward College) 6-3, 6-4.
  • 3 Singles | No. 3 Claudia Barboza def. No. 2 Dugleisy Linarez (EFSC) 6-4, 6-4.
  • 4 Singles | No. 1 Sarah Wardenburg def. No. 4 Ann Kathrine Wirlitsch (St. Pete) 6-0, 6-0.
  • 5 Singles | No. 2 Vanessa Cozamanis def. No. 3 Shaeda Nicole (EFSC) 6-2, 6-4.
