HIALEAH, FL. - Head Tennis Coach Brian Slack and his program moved into their new home, the Goodlet Tennis Center in Hialeah this summer. The tennis program was previously run out of North Miami Beach before the 2017 Fall semester.
The move comes after back-to-back NJCAA National Championships on the men's side and a one-point loss to Tyler Junior College in 2017 on the women's side. The women's team ran away with the crown in 2016, which marked the first National Championship in ASA Miami's history.
The women's team will start from scratch this season with only three returners on a team that was the 2017 national runner-up. Of those three, Sophomore Lisa Khamassi was ranked by the ITA last month as the 28th best singles player amongst all female junior college players. Lisa and her doubles partner from last season, Sarah Wardenburg were ranked 21st among doubles teams after taking home the three doubles national championship. In 2018, the Silver Storm will compete among the other five members that make up Region VIII and look for their third straight regional crown. In order to make it Waco, Texas this year, where the National Tournament will be held, the Silver Storm will have to finish in the top three in Region VIII.
As the reigning champ, the men's team will automatically qualify for the 2018 National Tournament in Plano, Texas. Plano has been good to Coach Slack and the ASA Miami men's tennis team with both championships coming on Collin County College's campus. The Silver Storm look to keep the party going in Plano for the third consecutive year. Tin Chen and Martin Mendoza lead the way for ASA ranked the third and seventh best singles player's respectively in the country by ITA. Other ASA Miami players ranked by ITA include Kentaro Mizushima (12) and Tomas Santantonio (17). The doubles teams of Chen/Mizushima (3) and Mendoza/Santantonio (7) were also recognized during this seasons first ITA rankings.
