Silver Storm Qualifies Three For Nationals; Kala Penn Wins Aiden A. Lewis Award

MIRAMAR, FL. - The outdoor season for the ASA Miami Track & Field team began on Tuesday at the Ansin Sports Complex. The second annual Shark Invitational was hosted by Nova Southeastern University and included other schools such as, Keiser University, St. Thomas Aquinas College and Lynn University, who only competed on the women's side.

There were several impressive performances by the men's team on Tuesday in Miramar. Freshman Ronique Todman took first place in the 400 meter run with a time of 47.76. That time is good enough for Todman to qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas on May 18th. Todman was also part of the 4x100 meter relay team that finished second with a time of 41.94. That was two one-hundredths of a second short (41.92) from sending the relay team to Hutchinson. D'Carlton GrantAsheel Ferdinand and Kevin Wallace were the other three members on the team. On the women's side, Kala Penn stole the show. Penn won the long jump, the triple jump and finished second in the 100 meter run. With a long jump distance of 5.72 meters and triple jump of 12.60 meters, Penn qualifies in both events for Nationals. At the conclusion of the competition, the highest scorers on both the men's and women's side were each given the Aiden A. Lewis Award. Penn won the award on the women's side.
