GAINESVILLE, FL – After starting out the game hitting its first three three-pointers, it seemed as though someone put an invisible lid on ASA Miami's basket as the Silver Storm shot a paltry 34 percent from the field en route to falling 83-51 to Santa Fe College Saturday morning in the first day of the Florida Colleges JuCo Shootout.
Shot after shot clanged off the rim, as the Silver Storm – who will play against Gulf Coast State College Sunday afternoon – shot 18-of-53 from the field (8-for-26 from three-point range) while the Saints got all bounces that come along with playing on your home floor as they shot 61 percent from the field (33-of-54) as well as from long distance (11-of-18).
The loss Saturday was the second straight game in which ASA Miami shot under 40 from the field. The Silver Storm shot just 37 percent from the field this past Tuesday (Dec. 4) in their 72-57 home loss to Eastern Florida State College.
Saturday's game was also ASA Miami's second loss to Santa Fe this season. The Silver Storm (3-10) lost to the Saints 85-76 three weeks ago in the midst of a three-game road trip, but couldn't find the same mojo that at least kept the initial game more competitive.
Silver Storm freshman Jonathan Vilchez, who received his first start of the season Saturday, once again played the role of leading scorer. Vilchez totaled 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting while redshirt sophomore guard Matt Maturah was right behind him with 13 points.
Santa Fe had three players with at least 10. Ryan Leonard led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting (5-of-6 from three-point range), 7-foot center Admir Besovic finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards, and Isaiah Islam added 10 points off the bench for the Saints.
Up Next: ASA Miami will take on Gulf Coast State College Sunday at 12 noon as the day's first game of the second day of the Florida Colleges JuCo Shootout.
