HIALEAH, FL. - ASA Miami's baseball program had arguably its best season ever in 2018.
The Silver Storm broke the program's single-season wins record with 23 as well as setting new marks in multiple statistical categories.
But the feat that made head coach Jonathan Hernandez smile the biggest was the eight student-athletes that signed to continue their careers at four-year schools.
Chavez had a breakout year for the Silver Storm after transferring from Miami Dade College. The Pembroke Pines native hit .315 with four home runs and 31 runs batted in. He will join fellow ASA Miami alum, Juan Teixeira who is currently a sophomore on FIU's baseball team.
A trio of ASA sophomores - Peter Baldrich, Ariel Diaz and Jiancarlos Garcia signed with Barry University, a local NCAA Division II program while Conor Kelly (Lyon College) and Kenneth Moreno-Costa (Thomas University) each signed with NAIA schools. Lyon College finished the season ranked 12th in the country.
Baldrich, Chavez, Garcia and Diaz were all named to the 2018 NJCAA All-Region VIII Team after impressive 2018 campaigns for the Silver Storm. Coach Hernandez is happy to see his sophomore's continue their college careers. "It's great to see that four-year schools are making it a point to scout and recruit our kids every year." Hernandez said. "I think that kids are starting to take notice of what we offer here at ASA and it's only the beginning. Every year we are looking to improve and continue to compete with the teams in both our region and nationally."
Coach Hernandez has 63 career wins and has placed 26 student-athletes at four-year schools in three seasons with ASA Miami.
