Silver Storm Come Up Short in Ft. Myers 2-1; Pineda Impresses

FT. MYERS, FL. - The 2018 season began on Friday night for the Silver Storm at City of Palms Park when ASA Miami took on the Florida Southwestern Buccaneers. The three-headed pitching monster for ASA consisting of Leudeny Pineda, Oscar Vargas and Brandon Valentin kept the Silver Storm in the game and limited the Buccaneers to five hits all night. Pineda got the start and went five innings, only allowing two runs - one earned - and one hit.

FSW got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning after a pitch in the dirt by Pineda got past ASA's catcher Luis Chavez. Pineda would strike out the following batter and then a balk was called on Pineda to make it 2-0 FSW. ASA came right back in the top of the fourth when Kenneth Moreno-Costa's single up the middle scored Jiancarlos Garcia. Moreno-Costa finished 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore out-fielder Peter Baldrich also finished with two hits and extended his hit-streak to 13 games going back to last season.

ASA gave themselves a chance in the top of the ninth to tie the game but couldn't capitalize after Brandon Paez hit a two-out double to right-center field. "I was really pleased with the way we pitched and played defense" said ASA Miami head coach, Jonathan Hernandez. "We still have a ways to go. We have to slow the game down and limit our mental mistakes, especially on the bases."

ASA Miami will head back to City of Palms Park on Saturday afternoon for a double-header with the Buccaneers. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00pm. Florida Southwestern will live-stream both games at
