ASA Miami Baseball Captures First Ever Region 8 Championship

MIAMI SHORES, FL. - Three years ago in 2014, Jonathan Hernandez became the school's first baseball coach. Hernandez set big expectations for the ASA Miami Baseball program along side veteran assistants Oscar Fernandez and Willie Vazquez. One of those expectations from Hernandez's vision came true on Saturday night at Barry University.

The ASA Miami Baseball team swept the three-game series against Pasco-Hernando this weekend in impressive fashion. The Storm outscored the Conquistadors 21-2. Anthony Vazquez started game one for ASA, the final score was 13-2. The game finished in the bottom of the eighth inning because due to the 10-run rule.

The 8-0 victory on Saturday night clinched the 2017 NJCAA DII Region 8 Championship. Mario Lopez threw the first complete game shutout in the school's history.

Even with two amazing performances on the mound by Lopez and Vazquez - who went seven innings, allowing two unearned runs and struck-out eight batters. It would be unfair to single out just one or two players, not only this weekend but the entire season. Coach Hernandez has preached all season "We need good pitching and good defense. The timely hits will come. I am thankful that these young men entrusted me with their collegiate careers" Coach Hernandez said emotionally. "I always wanted to build a program that had a roster full of [high] character guys."

From the lead-off hitter to the nine hole, each guy took their turn this season to contribute and help this young three-year program get to this point. Now, the motto will be survive and advance.

The Silver Storm are off until May 13. They have advanced to the NJCAA DII Southeast District Baseball Tournament at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, North Carolina. The tournament is double-elimination and the Storm have already earned the three seed.
